ペット - Mascotas - pets

学期も終わろうとしている。中学校の試験は終了。授業は６月２０日に終わる。この時期の学校活動は軽めのものが多い。

僕は２つのクラスでスペイン語を教えているが、なぜか成績が悪いクラスの方が相性がいい。レベルの高いクラスよりもこっちの生徒たちの方がどこか素直で、人間的で、性格もいい気がする。今日はこんなことを質問された。

「先生。なんでどの先生もみんな機嫌が悪いの？」

「僕は機嫌悪くないけど」

「そういえば先生は違うね。いつも楽しそう」

「そういうわけじゃない。ただ、機嫌の悪さが目立たないだけだろう。今の時期はみんな疲れているんだよ」

先日犬のフン、一部の飼い主が無責任であることの話をしていたが、そこで、このテーマに関するネットフォーラムを開くことにした。文章表現の練習もかねて、生徒たちにペットにまつわる経験、ペットとの関係について書いてもらうのだ。フォーラムは興味深く、充実したものとなった。結論にはちょっとガッカリさせられるかもしれないが。

・多くの生徒が、小さいころからいろんなペットをプレゼントされている。犬、猫、ヒヨコ、アヒルのひな、ハムスター、魚、ネズミ、モルモット、カメ、カメレオン、サル、ヘビ、タランチュラ、サソリ…

・ペットの死因のほとんどは、年齢ではなく世話不足。餓死、開いた窓やドアから出て死んだり、外で他の動物にやられたり。便器やゴミ箱に入って死ぬケースも。飼い主が非常識だったせいで死んだペットもいる。ある生徒はこう書いていた。

「金魚を買っていたんだけど、冬で寒かったから、風邪引くかもしれないってお母さんがお湯を入れちゃった」

・保護者も生徒も、ペットを生き物ではなく、オモチャだと考えているらしい。ペットが生きる上で必要としているもの、危険なものをきちんと理解していないのだ。こんなエピソードを紹介してくれた生徒もいた。サソリを買ってもらったのだが、ある日、１歳の弟がサソリのしっぽをつかんで飼育器から出し、開いていた窓から投げ捨てたのだという。

ペットビジネスが儲かるのはわかる。この国の経済に、ビジネス縮小の余裕などないことも。でも、ペットを買うのにもある程度の制限をもうけた方が賢明だと思う。運転免許証のように、ライセンスをもつ人だけが買えるようにしたらいい。なぜなら、ペットが子供たちの責任感をはぐくんでいるようには見えないからだ。それどころか、命が軽視されているような気がしてならない。

Mascotas

El curso escolar se está acabando. Los exámenes de secundaria han acabado y las clases acaban el viernes veinte de junio. En realidad estos días están llenos de todo tipo de actividades lúdicas.

De los grupos a los que enseño lengua castellana, con los que me llevo mejor es con los de nivel más bajo. Son más sinceros, más humanos, mejores personas. Hoy me preguntaban:

‒Profe, ¿Por qué estáis todos los profes de tan mala hostia?

‒Yo no estoy de mala hostia.

‒No, tú no. Tú siempre pareces contento.

‒No es que esté contento, es que a mí no se me nota tanto la mala hostia, pero al final, el problema es que todos estamos bastante cansados.

Como estuvimos hablando sobre las cacas de los perros y de la irresponsabilidad de algunas personas que tienen esos animales, se me ocurrió abrir un foro en la web como un ejercicio más de expresión escrita sobre el tema de las mascotas que han tenido como niños o tienen todavía, y su relación con ellas.

La actividad ha sido interesante y enriquecedora para todos, pero me temo que mis conclusiones son un poco deprimentes.

     A mis alumnos les han regalado desde que eran pequeños todo tipo de animales como mascotas: perros, gatos, pollitos, patitos, hámsters, peces, ratones, cobayas, tortugas, camaleones, incluso algún mono, alguna serpiente, alguna tarántula, escorpión…

     La inmensa mayoría de todos ellos no murieron de vejez sino por falta de los cuidados necesarios o de una mínima protección: de hambre, por ventanas o puertas abiertas o al abrirse, a manos de otras mascotas, en la taza del wáter, en la basura, o por pura falta de sentido común de sus dueños. Una chica ha escrito: «Teníamos un pez de agua fría en casa. Era invierno. Mi madre pensó que tendría frío y le echó agua caliente en la pecera».

     Parece claro que ni los padres de estos chicos y chicas ni ellos mismos piensan en las mascotas como seres vivos, sino como juguetes. No son conscientes de sus necesidades ni de sus peligros potenciales. Un chico me ha explicado que le compraron un escorpión y que su hermano de un año lo sacó del terrario cogiéndolo por la cola y lo tiró por una ventana abierta.

Ya sé que la venta de mascotas es un negocio que debe mover mucho dinero, y que la economía de este país no está para limitar los negocios, pero tal vez sería inteligente restringir la compra de ese tipo de animales domésticos para personas que tengan un permiso, como el de conducir, porque tal y como están las cosas, parece ser que tener una mascota no convierte a estos chicos y chicas en personas más responsables. Por el contrario, acaban teniendo muy poco respeto por la vida.

Pets

This schoolyear is coming to an end. Secondary school exams have been done and lessons will finish next Friday 20^th. As a matter of fact, these days are full with any kind of light activities.

Among the groups I am teaching Spanish language, I get on better with the one with low level students. They are more sincere, more human, better people. Today they have asked me:

‒Prof, why all teachers right now in such a bad mood?

‒I am not in a bad mood.

‒Not you. You seem always cheerful.

-‒I am not cheerful, you just don´t notice my bad mood, but, at the end of all, the problem is that we all are rather tired.

As we were talking yesterday about dog poo and irresponsible dogs’ owners, I came to the idea of opening a forum in the school webpage as an extra exercise to discuss the pets they had as children and their current pets and their relationship with them.

This activity has been interesting and enriching for all, but I am afraid my conclusions are a bit depressing:

          My students have received since they were small children all kind of animals as pets: dogs, cats, chicks, duckies, hamsters, fishes, mice, guinea pigs, turtles, chameleons, some of them even a monkey, snake, tarantula, scorpion…

      Most of those animals didn´t die of old age but because they didn´t receive the necessary care or the minimum protection: of hunger, because of open windows or doors or opening one of them, other pets killed them, in the toilet bowl, in the rubbish bin or because their owners just lacked common sense. One of my students has written: «We had a cold water fish at home. It was winter. My mother thought the weather might be too cold for it, so she poured some hot water in the fishbowl».

        It seems obvious to me that neither these boys or girls nor their parents think in their pets as living entities. They must think pets are just toys. They are conscious neither of their needs nor of their potential dangers. A boy has told me he was given a scorpion as a present and his one-year-old brother took it out of the terrarium by its tail with his hand and threw it away through an open window. 

I know pet sales is a business which moves a lot of money, and that economy in our country is not in such a situation that we can set too many limits for any commercial activity, but maybe it would be clever to restrict the purchase of pets to people with a license, a kind of driving license, because as the situation is now, it seems to me that keeping a pet doesn´t make these boys and girls more responsible. On the contrary, they may end up by not respecting any kind of life.
